As starlight gave way to dawn on ANZAC morning, more than 120 people stood in reverence at the Field of Crosses beside Creswick Cenotaph. The floodlit Field grew this year to 188 names, each cross made and inscribed by Army veteran, Arthur Bellingham.
Youthful Lighthorse Troops formed the catafalque party guarding the cenotaph and joined veterans, families and visitors as “In Flanders Fields”, “The Act of Remembrance” and “Ode to the Fallen” were recited by Creswick RSL Sub-branch Vice-President, RAAF Veteran, Jack Sewell AM.
After the Last Post has sounded, the crowd lingered over the names on the crosses in silent memory. Former AWAS Marj White place red roses for her late husband, Sgt Don White RAAF, and her son Cpl Neil White, Vietnam, later marching with fellow RSL member Marie Lewis, WAAAF.
A Gunfire Breakfast generously supplied by Vietnam Veteran, Daryl Hicks, at the Farmers Arms Hotel warmed the old diggers and young troops in preparation for the day.
