Honour Boards
Scrub Hill Uniting Church, Newlyn
With the closure of the church in May 2015, the RSL was asked to remove the two honour boards, which were relocated to the Creswick-Smeaton RSL Hall.
The two honour boards were in fair condition but needed restoration work to preserve them.
Conservator Jude Schahinger has been working with the RSL to assess and report on the condition and required works to preserve the honour boards.
With Jude's report, an application was made through the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Victorian Government Veterans grants, for a "Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour" grant in November 2015 and the RSL was successful.
In early August 2016, Jude collected the honour boards to start the restoration works and after two months of careful, painstaking work, the two honour boards almost look like new.
As part of the RSL's policy where an honour board has been recovered they will be relocated within their relevant community and in the case, the restored Honour Boards have been mounted in the entry to the Newlyn Community Centre.
