Honour Books
9 December 1921
For some considerable time past, the Education Department has been compiling a record of the services rendered to the Empire by the teachers and scholars of the department. The result is the compilation of a very handsome book, splendidly bound, and containing many photos and illustrations. The work is executed on first class toned paper, whilst the printing and text are of the best. The whole production, which is Australian, is a work of art and a credit to the department and State. This handsome volume is to be distributed amongst the schools, a copy for each, and also to the teachers who enlisted in the service of their Empire. The next of kin of teacher soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice will receive a copy also. In most instances this copy will be presented privately to the next of kin. In the Ballarat inspectorate the schools have been grouped into convenient centres, and on Saturday, 10th inst. Sir Alexander Peacock has kindly consented to present the volumes to the Clunes group, at Clunes, at 2 p.m., and also to the Smeaton group at Smeaton, at 8 p.m. The following Saturday, the 17th inst, Sir Alexander will visit the Learmonth group, at 3.30 p.m. and the Ascot group, at 8 p.m,. for the same purpose. These schools are in Sir Alexander Peacocks’ electorate, and it is very fitting that, as Minister of Education, he has so cheerfully consented to give a portion of his very busily occupied time to make the presentation. Those for schools will be presented to the school committees, who in turn will present them to their respective schools. The Minister will be pleased to see as many parents, teachers, friends and relatives as possible at these interesting presentations. As announced in another paragraph, the presentations at Creswick will take place tonight.
The great work of the Education Department of Victoria during the war is well known. A record has been compiled, showing the service done in this way by the teachers, the children and the department generally. A copy is being presented to school committees and returned soldier teachers. This ceremony is to take place in the Creswick Town Hall tonight (Friday) commencing at 8.30 o’clock. Sir Alexander Peacock, Minister of Education and member of the district, will make the presentations. A programme of songs, dances, etc, will be given by school children and others. There will be no charge for admission, and a hearty welcome is given to all residents of the town and district to attend.
