James Michael Nowlan
James was born in Carisbrook in February 1887
He went to school at Bulunwall and worked as an Orchardist
He enlisted on the 27 May 1915, Bruthen, as a Private Service No. 1763 with the 23rd Battalion, aged 18 years and 3 months.
Embarked on the HMAT Demonsthenes on the 16 July 1915 from Melbourne
The following information came from his dairy which he wrote daily in and started on the 1st September.
Landed at Pt. Suez on the 21st August and then on the 29th August trained to Alexandria
Then shipped to Greece.
On the 2nd September he had his first taste of war when one of the transport ships the Southlander was struck by a torpedo but did not sink.
Pages 9 & 10 were removed from the diary due to censorship.
His diary talks about the daily battles, the bombing from guns and planes and the smell in the trenches.
Landed at Gallipoli at midnight on the 5th September.
By early October it appeared that he was not feeling well as his hand writing was getting smaller and was confusing the months writing September instead of October.
His last entry was dated 24th October.
He was only there for 2 months when he was admitted onto the Hospital Ship "Devanha" on the 5th November of "sickness"
He died on 11th November 1915 of Pyrexia & Pneumonia and was buried at sea between Malta and Cape Matapan and was aged 18 years and 9 months
James is remembered at the Lone Pine Cemetery on Panel 66
