Creswick's Australia Day Breakfast
Breakfast Opening by Hepburn Shire Town Crier - Philip Greenbank
I would like to acknowledge that we are meeting on Jaara people country and pay my respects to the Dja Dja Wurrung community, their elders past, present and emerging.
Australia Day - a day where all Australians, come together to celebrate the great diversity of this country and of the people that make it up, from our new citizens to those who have managed this land for thousands of years.
Last year I spoke of mateship and how we step up in times of need and thanking our heroes, the firefighter as we were going through some of the worst fires in Australia’s history.
But over the past twelve months we have seen a different front line hero, who do their work every day without much recognition.
Except for now. These are our health care workers, doctors nurses, support staff, who have work more hours in the past twelve months than they would probably do in 5 years. Working long days and nights, months on end without a break and working with a killer pandemic - COVID-19.
In Victoria we had 804 deaths but what we don’t know, is how many lives were saved due to these tireless workers.
Like our firefighters last year, our Health care workers this year shows us what the meaning of mateship is all about.
I ask that you continue to support our new heroes and thank them whenever you see them.
What makes this country great are those who come from faraway lands and want to call this country home. Last night I was at the Hepburn Shire Australia Day Civic Ceremony and there were three new citizens who took the oath. One had been here for 6 years and another for 21 years but our third new citizen has been here for 60 years before taking the oath but at least she is now an Aussie.
So enjoy this day, as we Australians only know how, and keep a thought for those who are working today to allow us to be able to socialise with our families and friends.
I would now like to introduce our Master of Ceremonies for today's event, Mr Alan Morris, President Creswick-Smeaton RSL
God Bless Australia Day
God Save The Queen
