Bus trip to Puckapunyal Museum & Seymour's Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk -
18th September 2014
Forty-three members of the Creswick-Smeaton RSL, Senior Citizens & Creswick Men's Social Health Group departed at 0745 to visit the Puckapunyal Army Tank Museum.
Leaving from the back of the Information Centre, by bus, we headed to Tooborac for morning tea, catered by Ballarat Coachlines or the General Store.
From there we headed to Puckapunyal and were stopped at the main checkpoint, due to some paperwork not having been complete from the Museum curator. After a 20-30 minute wait, an escort came to meet us and after receiving our visitor passes were allowed through the checkpoint and arrived at the museum.
The first part of the museum were static displays of artillery weapons and shells, uniforms, badges, miniature tanks in battle dioramas and storyboards of various battle of Australian involvement. From here you then go outside to see the reason for the museum, Tanks, everywhere from the first tank used in war to the current Australian tank "The Leopard".
Next stop was Seymour for lunch at the Prince of Wales Hotel and a visit (across the road) to the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk which was opened in March 2013. The Wall includes both the names of all Australian veterans who served in the Vietnam War and a photographic timeline plus the Commemorative panel for those who did not return.
The Walk is a meandering earth path set amidst native trees and grasses that resemble rubber trees and rice paddies. These two plants are synonymous with Vietnam. The Wall is made up of 106 panels of DigiGlass with the names of the of the every Serviceman and Servicewoman who served in their various capacities and the 11 tracker dogs. The names are separated only by the Service in which they served in alphabetical order. The plinths on which the panels stand have holes for Poppies: the effect is a field of Poppies under the names. Behind the names is the picture story of the Vietnam conflict and the wall is lite of an evening.
At the start of the walk a recreation of the Luscombe bowl, red brick pavers with names and dedications and a black granite memorial Cairn for those who did not return. Further along is a Centurion Tank and a replica of the Long Tan Cross. At the entrance, mounted on a pole, is a Huey helicopter.
This Commemorative Walk and its Wall are free for all to view, so take the time to follow the meandering path or sit and contemplate. The wall is lite nightly.
Our final stop for the day was at Woodend where you had the choice of beer tasting at Holgate Brewhouse or a Latte at Bourkie's Bakehouse. After refreshments we headed back to Creswick, arriving 7 minutes ahead of schedule.
